Squirrels can achieve anything they set their minds to – and they have lots of fun along the way.
Ages 4-6 years
At Squirrels, big adventures start small.
Our youngest Scouts begin their journey here — trying new things, making new friends, and learning about the world around them through fun, play, and discovery.
Squirrels are young people aged 4 to 6 who:
- Try fun activities and learn new skills
- Make friends and play together
- Explore their surroundings through adventure
- Ask big questions about the world
- Help others and learn to be kind
What do Squirrels get up to?
Being a Squirrel is all about having fun while growing in confidence.
With their Drey (that’s what we call a group of Squirrels), they’ll start exploring their world — one little step at a time.
Playing and adventuring outdoors
Whether they’re building a bug hotel, splashing in puddles, or going on a mini treasure hunt, Squirrels love to be outside. There’s so much to see, touch, and learn – even just around the corner from home.
Trying new things and learning through play
Squirrels don’t sit still for long! They’ll explore new ideas by getting stuck in — crafting, cooking, building, experimenting, and imagining. It’s a hands-on way to build confidence and develop skills like listening, sharing, and speaking up.
Helping others and being kind
Even the smallest Scout can make a big difference. Squirrels learn about kindness, teamwork, and helping others – from sharing a toy to taking part in a mini community project. Every little action counts.
Who leads Squirrels?
Each Drey is led by an adult Squirrel leader, with help from other adult volunteers. They make sure every session is safe, fun, and full of energy.
Within the Drey, children may also get little chances to lead – like helping tidy up, showing a friend how to do something, or choosing a story or song. Everyone gets a turn to shine.
Squirrels usually begin and end their sessions gathered together in a circle. It’s a chance to say hello, share stories, and get excited about what’s next!

From playing games and making friends to exploring new places, Squirrels is the first step in a big adventure with Scouts.
